The purpose of Morning Star, Inc. is to offer a safe, drug and alcohol free community in Manhattan for people to experience a sense of belonging and programs to help reach a more fulfilling and healthy life. We want to empower people through mental health and substance use recovery to break through the barriers of stigma while decreasing isolation, incarcerations, and hospitalizations.
We believe that all people with mental health illness will transform their lives as they experience the journey of recovery!
Peer support is a relationship based on equality and respect. It improves the lives of Morning Star members and minimizes the negative impacts of stigma, discrimination and social isolation that is often associated with mental illnesses.
Our mental health peer support activities are available for Morning Star members to make great friends, develop connections, gain respect and most importantly, improve lives.

"Before I came to Morning Star, I was hospitalized often for mental health illnesses. When I was diagnosed with Schizoaffective Disorder, they told me I was unemployable, would never have a meaningful relationship, and that I wouldn't even be able to take care of a pet. When I came to Morning Star I was broken, but everyone here is so understanding and accepting. Through peer-to-peer support and groups, I have gained confidence and dignity. I now have a job and am pursuing a BS degree at Kansas State University. I have hope, friendships, and a belief in a great future for myself."
I was behaviorally and emotionally immature before Morning Star. I had autism, mental illness and had been bullied. I believed that I was not normal, and was strange, weird and different. After I came to Morning Star, I met very loving people and found inclusion and understanding. I learned from others and their struggles, began to understand myself better, and became more loving and outgoing. I now see myself as beautiful and want to continue to learn about leadership and advocacy to help others transform the same way that I have.
